Scam Update

Last week and earlier today I touched upon and warned about a scam. How old this scam is I do not know. There may be variations to this, but I will explain about the one I know. I hope this helps someone.

Here's how it goes that I have been told about: A person contacts or is contacted by another person who is in Nigeria. I am not picking on the country Nigeria, I am just stating where this particular situation came from. As the two people talk, it seems that the person who is in Nigeria, is just there visiting a relative, when they say they have been living in whatever city you maybe in. Anyways, after a bit of time of exchanging emails or instant messages, 2-3 weeks, the person in Nigeria explains that they will be coming back to a particular city soon. They have to get back to work etc... Now here is the beauty of it. They explain that they brought a USPS postal money order with them, (hey, it beats carrying cash around with them). Anyways, as the scam continues the local banks in Nigeria won't cash a usps money order. They want to know if they can fed ex, ups, dhl, or whatever the money order to you so you can cash it and wire the funds back to them. Simple, I mean whoever heard of counterfeit money orders from the postal service. Well, the M.o. arrives, it looks like a real money order, it even has serial numbers on it from the city the person says she is living at, it is cashed, the money is sent to them, all done no problems. AH HA! Within 7 - 10 days, your local bank notifies you that the m.o. was counterfeit and your account has been debited!

NICE! For being a decent person and trying to help someone out, you get the short end of the stick. Of course by now, you can't get a hold of the person you have been chatting, emailing, etc with. And you have also eaten a $500.00, $750.00, or maybe even more bogus Money Order!

I have no answer, but I just want you to beware of how some people can take advantage of others. What a thing to have happen to someone, especially this time of the year.

Be safe, and I would love to know if anyone else has more info on this subject, or any other scams.
