Top Ten Halloween Safety Tips

Greetings,

I can't believe Halloween is here already. Where has this year
gone?

Halloween is fun for kids, but, unfortunately, it can also be an
evening that children end up visiting the emergency room.

Follow this advice to keep your kids safe this year.

1) The number ONE rule of Halloween safety is to ensure your child
is supervise. Parents should stay very aware of their children's
movements.

2) Don't let your child go to the door unattended and never let your
child go into the house. Because Halloween Safety is so
important, the parents should not be letting their 1st graders run
off by themselves.

3) Halloween safety is more important than candy. Halloween safety
is insisted on the child to prevent any accidents or injuries.

4) Halloween safety is about making sure kids are safe in their
costumes, on the street, and around strangers

5) Kids in ill-fitting costumes are more likely to trip and fall. As you
select your children's costumes, make sure they are fire-resistant
and not so long that kids could trip while walking.

6) Parents should also apply reflective tape on costumes, or make
sure kids have reflective shoes, hat or bag so they are more visible
to cars. Make sure adults are visible to cars at night also.

7) Rules on crossing the street and going with strangers can be
forgotten during the commotion of trick-or-treating; review the
rules with the kids. Reinforce basic safety tips such as:
(a) Don't get into cars with strangers,
(b) Not talking to strangers,
(c) Looking both ways before crossing streets,
(d) Be aware of what (and who) is around you,
(e) Obeying traffic rules.

8) Kids under 12 should have a parent travel with them. Try to
have at least one adult for every six kids in the group.

9) Do your Halloween safety duty and check every piece of candy
your kids bring home this year. The chances of your kids getting
contaminated candy are very slim, but it's always better to be safe
than sorry.

10) Additionally, fire departments throughout the US recommend
using Halloween as a day to change your smoke alarm batteries,
to alarm you if an accidental jack-o-lantern fire occurs, and to
protect your family throughout the rest of the year.

Additionally parents; remember to practice Halloween safety if you
are driving kids around. Do not pass stopped cars if you are driving,
as they may be unloading groups or small children. If you are
driving, it is best to choose a neighborhood, and park your
vehicle.

And please, don't talk on your cell phone while driving.

Sincerely,

Thomas "Trapper" Sherwood

PS...Masks may be entertaining, but they can cause serious
Halloween safety hazards if they're not designed well. If your kids
have Halloween masks that restrict their vision, forgo the mask and
use face paints with nontoxic makeup instead.

Ok, good things are happening and in between doing my Locksmith business, (www.sherwoodlocksmithing.com) thing are progressing on the web page.

Hosting company unpgrade from www.namecheap.com , done.

I went into my accounts page, located my domain name, changed server name that namecheap issused me.

I went to the control panel you get with namecheap as as hosting company and added my new domain name to my already existing name www.hotdenergy.com

Oh yes, I also registered my corp name, www.Lexzco.com that points to my Locksmith company page. I did that so when people receive a confirmation email from me, it looks a lot more professional. All emails from my two new sites now come from Lexzco inc.

Also, for my auto responder and shopping cart, I am using
http://www.automateyourwebsite.com/app/?pr=4&id=138309

They answered my questions about my auto responder and they are another company I recommend.

So things are progressing very well.

I have a couple of tweakes to do with the sales letter. Browsers IE, and Mozilla are screwing with my quotation marks around some of my sentances, don't know why.

Anyways, things are closing in on getting done.

I feel this site will be able to help people stay safe, and get their families, homes and business safe from crime.

TIPS FOR HANDLING BOGUS PHONE CALLS

Greetings everyone,

Here is your March 2008 edition of Sherwood Locksmithing's Security eZine. This months Newsletter deals with Handling Bogus Phone Calls. As always, we hope you find the following article helpful.

They may say that their car has broken down and they need to phone someone for help. They may pretend to be a workman, saying that they need to check your electricity or water. They might even claim to be from the council and that they are carrying out a local survey. Whatever reason a caller gives, you need to be sure that they aren't just trying to get into your home to steal something.

There are around 12,000 incidents of "distraction burglary" each year, where callers get into homes and then steal cash or valuables while the occupier is distracted in some way. Sometimes they work in pairs, with one doing the talking while the other is stealing and they often target the elderly.

Be on your guard every time the doorbell rings, or there's a knock at your door. Look out of your window to see who's there first and if you don't know who the person is, open the window slightly and talk to them that way, rather than opening your door. Alternatively, have a viewer fitted in your front door so that you can take a good look at who's there first. If your eyesight isn't so good, don't worry as you can now get wide-angle viewers to help you see better.

Put the door chain or door bar on before opening the door and talk through the gap. You could even fit a small mirror to the wall next to the door so that you can easily see the person you are talking to.

When the caller has left and you've closed the door, don't forget to unhook the chain so that any friend or relative you have given a key to can still get in.

Make sure your back door is locked if someone knocks at your front door. Sometimes thieves work together with one coming in the back way, while the other keeps you talking at the front.

Keeping the chain on the door, ask callers from the councilor any other organization to pass through some identification. If you need your glasses to check this don't think it's rude to close the door and go and get them. A genuine caller won't mind.

If you're still not sure, ask the caller to leave and tell them to write and make an appointment so that someone else can be with you the next time they call.

The basic rule is if you don't know the person at your door don't let them in.

As part of the Government's "Stop, Chain, Check" campaign, local councils, social services and Age Concern centers have further information they can provide to older people. They can also help with door viewers, chains and mirrors, and in certain circumstances, may be able to supply a personal attack alarm that connects through to a control center.

Also, be aware of your local Police Departments phone number.

If you are not sure, CALL THE POLICE! Remember, They are here to serve and protect us!

By the way, this is not an all inclusive list. If you know some "tricks", please leave your comments. Let's all get involved in our personal security.

How to select a Burglar Alarm

Hello friends,

Here is your February 2008 edition of Sherwood Locksmithing'sSecurity eZine.
This months Newsletter deals with Burglar Alarms.
As always, We hope you find the following article helpful.
============================================================

HOW TO SELECT A BURGLAR ALARM

Burglars dislike noise - it attracts attention. A barking dog is a good deterrent in preventing burglaries. However, never totally depend on a watch dog. Some professional burglars have been known to carry delectable "dog snacks" in their pockets and with a full stomach, some watch dogs make friends easily and forget their purpose of guarding the premises. The most reliable safeguard to protect your home and possessions is a reliable alarm.

Many types of burglar alarms can be obtained for residential use. It is advisable, however, that basic hardware security measures be followed first.

If additional security is desired, the following recommendations could be helpful:
1. Have a home demonstration with the alarm done in your home, not at their office.
2. An audible alarm is recommended over silent alarms for residential use in order to first - protect persons and secondly - property.

A RELIABLE ALARM SHOULD INCLUDE:

A. A battery-powered fail-safe backup.
B. A rearming capability and siren timer shut-off.
C. Read-out ability to check working system.
D. Siren sounding device that can be installed on exterior of home to alert neighbors of possible intrusion.

When shopping for an alarm system, please take this list with you.

SECONDARY BARRIER
If the value of small personal items warrants protection, a secondary barrier is an additional safeguard. On a hinging closet door, install a 1" deadbolt lock. Store your jewelry, furs, cameras, guns, silverware and other valuables behind this barrier. Be sure to "pin" the hinges and disguise the door as best as possible. ===============================================================
Get Rid of Those Sleepless Nights Once & For All With Additional Home Protection
Big Jammer-Big Jammer is a strong 20 gauge steel adjustable door brace that installs easily under a door knob and provides added security for home or business. Adjusts to fit most hinged doors. End caps can be removed to allow for use on sliding glass doors as well. Clean, baked enamel finish makes it attractive for in-house use

Window Alert-Mace Window Alert is a 95 decibel glass breakage alarm that attaches to windows and is set off by vibrations if someone tries to break through. Installs easily on any window. Solid, state-of-the-art design. Most of the time Batteries are included.

Slide Away Alarm-This compact, attractive alarm uses magnetic affinity to initiate its 110 decible siren. The base of the alarm is bolted to door or window frame, the actuator is connected to the window or door. The alarm is activated by opening the door or window. Great for any door or window, particularly those hard to protect sliding glass doors. It Requires 3 lithium button cell batteries and most of the time they should be included. ==================================================================

HOW TO BURGLAR-PROOF YOUR WINDOWS

Greetings Friends,

Here is your January 2008 edition of Sherwood Locksmithing's Security eZine. We look forward to delivering you information monthly on Security issues.

This months Newsletter deals with the Security of your windows. We hope you find the following article helpful.
============================================================
HOW TO BURGLAR-PROOF YOUR WINDOWS
Many burglars enter homes by simply breaking glass windows. A good deterrent is to have better Quality glass installed at vulnerable points around the perimeter of your residence. Most burglars avoid attempting to break the following types of glass due to the fear of attracting attention.

LAMINATED GLASS is made by a vinyl or plastic interlayer sandwiched between two layers of glass. This type of glass adds additional strength to your windows. To gain entry, a burglar would have to Strike the glass repeatedly in the same spot in order to make a small opening. Most burglars are reluctant to create this type of noise for fear of being detected.

TEMPERED GLASS is made by placing a piece of regular glass in an oven, bringing it almost to the melting point, and then chilling it rapidly. This causes a skin to form around the glass. Fully tempered glass is four to five times stronger than regular glass.

WIRED GLASS adds the benefit of a visible deterrent. Extra effort will be needed to break the glass and then cut through the wire located within the glass, in order to gain entry.

PLASTICS: Plastic material is divided into two types: acrylic or polycarbonate. The acrylics are more than ten times stronger than glass of the same thickness and are commonly called plexiglass.

Polycarbonate sheets are superior to acrylics and are advertised as 250 times more impact resistant than safety glass, and 20 times more than other transparent plastic.
==============================================================
With SLIDING WINDOWS the primary object is to keep the window from sliding or being lifted up and out of the track. There are many manufactured products available for securing windows. Here are some suggestions:

PINNED WINDOW ANTI-SLIDE BLOCK SLIDEBOLT: It is not recommended that you lock a window in a ventilating position. This is an invitation to a prying action which can result in entry. Key locking devices offer no real security, and they can be a fire exit hazard.

CASEMENT WINDOWS are the simplest to secure. Make sure the latch works properly and that the "operator" has no excess play. If so, replace the worn hardware.

DOUBLE HUNG WINDOWS latches may be jimmied open. If a window is not used, screw it shut (except bedrooms). For windows in use, drill a sloping hole into the top of the bottom window, through and into the bottom of the top window, and insert an easily removable pin or nail.

LOUVRE WINDOWS are bad security risks. Remove and replace with solid glass or other type of ventilating window. Or protect with a grate or grille (except bedrooms).

At night, a bedroom window may often be the quickest and safest means of getting out. Because of the danger of fire, decorative grilles are not recommended on bedroom windows. ===============================================================

Discover why You need sleep!

Dear Friend,

Problem sleepiness may be associated with difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, loss of energy, fatigue, lethargy, and emotional instability.

Problem sleepiness can be deadly.

Approximately 100,000 automobile crashes each year result from drivers who were “asleep at the wheel.” In a survey of drivers in New York State, approximately 25 percent reported they had fallen asleep at the wheel at some time. Crashes in which the driver falls asleep are especially common among young male drivers.

One large study found that in over 50 percent of fall-asleep crashes, the driver was 25 years old or younger.

In addition to the high risk of automobile crashes, problem sleepiness can cause difficulties with learning, memory, thinking, and feelings, which may lead to poor school and work performance and difficulty with relationships.

Furthermore, problem sleepiness leads to errors and accidents in the workplace.

Discover how you can sleep better without the aids of any sleeping pills. Wake up feeling refeshed and rejuvenated and ready to tackle the world!

Checkmate your insomnia with "The Sleep Secret" eBook, available online at:

Getting Your Vehicle Ready For Winter

Hey Ya'll,

According to the calender, winter hasn't arrived yet, (yeah right, ask everyone in New England, Midwest, to name just two places.) Anyways, this time of the year dont forget to take car of your car. Here are some tips.

Mechanical failure -- an inconvenience any it occurs -- can be deadly in the winter. Preventive maintenance is a must. Besides, a well maintained vehicle is more enjoyable to drive, will last longer, and could command a higher resale price.

Some of the following tips can be performed by any do-it-yourselfer; others require the skilled hands of an auto technician.

First things first. Read your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedule.

Engine Performance - Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather makes existing problems worse. Replace dirty filters-air, fuel, PCV, etc.

Fuel - Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note that a gas tank which is kept filled helps keep moisture from forming.

Oil - Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual -- more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling System - The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) DIYers, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.

Windshield Wipers - Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent-you'll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Heater/Defroster - The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.

Battery - The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly.Removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles. Check your manual.Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.

Lights - Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust System - Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floor boards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.Cold weather will only make existing problems worse. A breakdown -- never pleasant -- can be deadly in winter.

Tires - Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressures once a month. Let the tires "cool down" before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don't forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Emergencies - Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flash light, and a cell phone. Put a few "high-energy" snacks in your glove box.

Enjoy the upcoming Winter and be safe while driving.

I'm Trap and I'm out.

How To Burglar Proof Your Doors

Greetings,

Here is your December 2007 edition of Sherwood Locksmithing's Security eZine.
With the Holiday's in full swing now,I hope you find the following article useful.

HOW TO BURGLAR-PROOF YOUR DOORS

The majority of devices mentioned in this report cost very little. All of them will help reduce burglary and make your house or apartment more secure.

Begin with a home "security" check. Start with the front door and work clockwise around the entire inside of yourhome, finishing with the back yard, fence and shrubs, gatesand garage.
Shrubbery should never block the view of your front door. This allows an intruder the opportunity of privacy to gain entrance.

A wide-angle viewer in the door lets you know your visitor in advance. This item is recommended over a chain lock. ============================================================
LOCKS, BOLTS AND HINGES

A DEAD-LATCH is an inexpensive lock set which keeps the burglar from simply slipping your Door open with a plastic credit card. This method of entry is common in many areas, but very easy to prevent.

AUXILIARY DEADLOCK: 1" deadbolt, single cylinder with hardened cylinder guard, and thumb turn. For extra security, a single cylinder deadbolt lock, with one-inch throw and case hardened insert, is recommended for all exterior doors. If you have easily breakable glass within 40 inches of a deadbolt lock, it should be augmented with a stronger type of glass or plastic to provide adequate security.

Most police departments do not recommend double cylinder deadbolt locks for residential use. You may be adding additional security at the expense of personal safety with a double cylinder deadbolt. For example, you could lock yourself in and not be able to escape in case of fire or other emergency.

The RIM LOCK is a 1" deadbolt lock which is installed on the inside surface of the door. It is less expensive than other types of locks, but equally effective for security.

The "JIMMY -PROOF" RIM LOCK is another lock which is installed on the inside surface of the door. But this lock has vertical dead bolts, which is an approved device.

CANE BOLTS: 1/2" in diameter by 12" high installed at the top and bottom of the inactive door offers minimum security. Many homes with pairs of doors, use half-barrel slide bolts on the inactive door. These are weak and totally inadequate.

FLUSH DOLTS: installed at the top and bottom of the inactive door or pair of doors, flush bolts Offer additional security, since the intruder cannot get at these devices to tamper with them if the doors are locked. ============================================================
HINGE PROTECTION
Some exterior doors are improperly installed so that the hinges are installed from outside. To protect such a door from being lifted from its hinges by pulling the hinge pin, follow these simple steps:

1. Remove two screws, opposite each other, from both leaves of the hinge plate.
2. Insert screw or concrete nail into jamb leaf, protruding 1/2".
3. Drill out the opposing screw hole in the door. Do this in the top and bottom hinge of the door. When closed, the hinge pins may be removed, but the door will remain firmly in place.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE AWAY

Greetings,

Here is your November 2007 edition of Sherwood Locksmithing's
Security eZine. With the Holiday's approaching, and maybe some
travel days on your calendar, I hope you find the following
article useful.

=============================================================
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE AWAY

Be sure to lock your doors before you leave, and let a neighbor,
(that you trust) have a key. When leaving your home, practice the
following advice - it could pay big, big dividends.

GOING TO THE MARKET OR OUT TO DINNER?

A residence, which presents a "lived-in" appearance, is a
deterrent to burglars. Never leave notes that can inform a
burglar that your house is unoccupied. Make certain all
windows and doors are secured before departing. An empty
garage advertises your absence so close the doors.

When going out at night, leave one or more interior lights
on and perhaps have a radio playing (TV Sets should not be
left unattended). Timers may be purchased that will turn
lights on and off during your absence.

Do not leave door keys under flowerpots or doormats, inside
an unlocked mailbox, over the doorway, or in other obvious
places.

WHEN PLANNING VACATIONS OR PROLONGED ABSENCES

Discontinue milk, newspapers, and other deliveries by phone
or in person ahead of time. Do not leave notes.

Arrange for lawn care and have someone remove advertising
circulars and other debris regularly. On the other hand,
several toys scattered about will create an impression of
occupancy.

Notify the post office to forward your mail or have a
trustworthy person pick it up daily. Apartment house tenants
should also heed this hint since stuffed mail receptacles are
a give-away when no one is home.

Inform neighbors of your absence so they can be extra alert
for suspicious persons. Leave a key with them so your place
may be priodica1ly inspected. Ask them to vary the positions
of your shades and blinds.

When you leave, do not publicize your plans. Some burglars
specialize in reading newspaper accounts of other people's
vacation activities.

If you find a door or window has been forced or broken while
you were away, DO NOT ENTER. The criminal may still be inside.
Use a neighbor's phone immediately to summon police.

Do not touch anything or clean up if a crime has occurred.
Preserve the scene until police inspect for evidence.

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO:
1. Lock before you leave.
2. Trust a neighbor with key.
3. Set Your Alarm
4. Be a concerned neighbor - yourself.
===============================================================

Thomas "Trapper" Sherwood

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CARS, BICYCLES AND MOTORCYCLES

Hello again!

What a crazy past couple of month's! Do you find yourself
asking "Where did summer go?" Between vacations and schools
restarting, I don't know where the time has gone.

As I promised last month, here is this months Security Blog.

As always, I hope you find the following article helpful.
=============================================================

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CARS, BICYCLES AND MOTORCYCLES

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CAR
Always lock your car doors. Be certain all windows are
completely closed. When driving, keep all doors locked.
It is best to park in attended lots. If you must leave a key
with the attendant, leave only the ignition key. In all cases
lock your car. At night, park only in well-lighted areas.

If you have a garage, the single lock on the door is
inadequate to keep intruders from prying up the opposite side
and crawling in. One of three methods may be used to secure
the door:

(1) Add another bolt and padlock on the opposite side.

(2) Install a pair of cane bolts on the inside - only operable
from the inside.

(3) Add a top center hasp. Any person of average height can
operate this locking device. The hasp must be of hardened
steel and installed with carriage bolts through the door or
gate. Use large washers on the inside. After the nuts are
secured, deface the threads of the bolt ends with a hammer
to keep the nuts from being removed.

In every case, use a minimum standard exterior padlock. If
hideing a key outside, try a diversion safe. Most hiding
places are obvious to the burglar.

Never leave a padlock unlocked. This is an invitation to have
the padlock removed so that a key can be made, and the lock
returned to its position. Later, the burglar returns when no
one is home and enters at his leisure, using "his" key.

HOW TO PROTECT BICYCLES
You don't leave your car unlocked, so treat your bicycle the
same way. Use an approved chain and padlock whenever you are
not on the seat! Lock it to the garage - with a 3/8" x 6" eye
screw fastened to a stud. The eye screw should be at least 3
feet above the floor, because this makes using a pry bar much
more difficult.

Whenever you lock your bike in a public place, chain it to a
secure rack or stanchion through the frame and a wheel. Keep
the chain as high above the ground as the bike will allow.
This reduces the leverage for a pry bar or bolt cutter attack.

MINIMUM STANDARD FOR APPROVED CHAIN
Must be at least 5/16" hardened steel alloy. Links must be of
continuous welded construction. Lighter chain, or chain with
open links simply will not withstand bolt cutting attacks.
Don't GIVE your bicycle away! Using anything less will invite
its theft.

HOW TO PROTECT MOTORCYCLES
These expensive bikes require additional security measures.
They must be secured with a mated 3/8" hardened steel alloy
chain and a padlock of equal strength. Sheathed cable has not
proven to be a satisfactory deterrent to theft.

LIGHTING
GOOD exterior lighting is important, particularly when the yard
area is obscured by high, non-removable shrubbery. The best
possible location for outside lights is under the eaves. This
makes ground level assault more difficult. You can buy an
inexpensive timer or photo-electric cell which will
automatically turn the lights on at dusk and turn them off at
dawn.

Sincerely,

Trap
